about

Ten years ago, the global financial crisis dealt a severe blow to the globalized economy led by the United States and Europe. As Asia was emerging as the first ray of light in the global economic recovery that followed, the inaugural CommonWealth Economic Forum was held in early 2010 and highlighted the “Rise of a New Asia.” The forum explored the types of new roles Asian countries, companies and individuals could play in the global arena.

Ten years later, the wave of anti-globalism triggered by the financial crisis remains strong and has even gained momentum. The liberal global and political order led by the United States that arose after the fall of the Berlin Wall is being challenged like never before.

That challenge is coming in large part from the ascent of a powerful China, featuring a leader without term limits and a state capitalist system that is concentrating its resources to support the development of advanced technologies and the Belt and Road Initiative.

As an established power faces off against a rising power, the two sides may already be falling into a Thucydides Trap, with the trade dispute the first salvo in what could escalate into a bigger confrontation.

Asia has benefited from free trade, global supply chains and the old order to achieve prosperity. How can it continue to stand out as the rules of the game change? From the economy and the world of ideas to technology, contemporary living and the environment, the 10th CommonWealth Economic Forum will define the 10 major trends set to influence the future and bring together experts from 10 countries in 10 sessions to explore ways forward.
